FUNCTION: Group Chief Scientist
LOCATION: Santa Barbara (SPSG) - Santa Barbara, CA
EDUCATION REQUIRED: Bachelor’s degree, preferably in math, engineering, or the physical sciences.
REQUIRED SKILLS/EXPERIENCE: Applicants must have past performance demonstrating the ability to develop, present, and defend innovative mathematical methods that will be implemented in Company software tools and products. Ideally, this past performance will be in the fields of cost estimating, earned value management and/or schedule analysis. Applicants must have a thorough understanding of basic and advanced statistics and regression analysis with evidence of successful application of these principles in the specification, design and maintenance of software tools and products; be able to think analytically; and have the ability to look at problems in new ways and apply first principles to develop a viable solution. Equally important are strong written and oral communication skills; the desire to mentor and develop staff; and a demonstrated understanding of what passes for a high quality, innovative analysis/study. Applicants must be capable of leading or principally contributing to the largest and most difficult studies that the Company undertakes. Applicants must have achieved recognition in a professional field through original papers and presentations and have well-developed leadership qualities. Applicants with a PhD and/or Master’s degree, demonstrated analytical skills plus outstanding, relevant experience are encouraged to apply.
RESPONSIBILITIES: Responsibilities will include planning, performing, directing, presenting and defending research and/or development work on simple and complex algorithms to support software development projects. This also includes authoring or reviewing/editing documents that define new or revised algorithms. They also include planning and directing projects, supplying technical inspiration, leadership, and consultation with professional co-workers and customers. Ability to understand and appreciate counter arguments is just as important as defending a specific position. Developing an idea into a realistic solution is important. Having the ability and desire to go on the road to successfully sell the implemented solution directly to colleagues, customers and at conferences is crucial. This requires skill in developing both practical application and academically rigorous positions to promote our products. We also expect the successful applicant to have mastered the ability to be flexible enough to adjust to the customer’s objectives, but strong enough to ensure the quality of the solution is not compromised.
